BEHIND THE FILM

One studio. Many looks.

Working within a tight budget, we built TRUDNO around a single cyc-wall studio. Drawing on the artist’s references, I used lighting to create a range of setups and give the video visual variety.

To give the female verse its own moment, I held back the performer’s full reveal, using silhouettes and close-ups until her verse began. Her entrance was timed to the song.

Before the reveal.

I kept her in silhouette before her verse, establishing her presence while holding back the full reveal.

02 / HER ENTRANCE
Her verse. Her moment.

The reveal arrives with her verse, giving that part of the song its own visual moment.

A SHORT FILM BY GURDEEP SANDHU

Emergence.

A personal short film exploring routine, identity and the distance we can feel from ourselves.

Written, directed, shot and edited by Gurdeep Sandhu.

Behind Emergence — ideas and choices
THE IDEA

Routine and identity.

The idea came from the tension between everyday routine and a sense of identity. At its centre is the feeling of losing touch with the creative part of yourself.

THE VISUAL CHOICES

Light, colour and framing.

Colour, composition and symbolic imagery were used to suggest an inner state. These choices give feeling a visual form, leaving room for the audience’s own interpretation.

THE INTENTION

Room for your own reading.

The aim was to invite viewers to reflect on their own routines and sense of identity. The symbolism leaves space for a personal reading of the film.

MY PROCESS / MUSIC VIDEOS

From the first listen
to the final frame.

A song, a conversation, and a world we build together.

01 / LISTEN

Let the images begin.

I return to the song, listening for the meaning in its lyrics, the emotion in the voice, and the rhythm that carries it. The first ideas grow from what the music makes me feel.

02 / CONNECT

Find the artist’s intention.

We talk about the world the artist imagines and the intent behind their writing. Together, we shape the concept around the budget, shoot days, locations, wardrobe and style of the images.

03 / DEVELOP

Give the vision a form.

I bring these ideas into a Director’s Treatment: creative direction, visual references, a colour palette, wardrobe and shot ideas. For narrative concepts, I develop a full script alongside it.

Once we agree on the direction, we confirm the locations, dates, casting and production arrangements.

04 / CREATE

Bring the song to life.

On set, I work closely with the artist on performance, keeping the feeling of the song at the centre of each setup. Light, framing, movement and performance all work toward the same intention.

05 / SHAPE

Find the film, together.

The collaboration continues through the edit. From the first rough cut to the final colour grade, I keep the artist involved as we shape the rhythm, storytelling and performance into a finished video.
